Harold Dale Blacksmith, 60 years old, is a full-blooded Dakota/Lakota/Isanti Sioux. He comes from the “Wipa Zoka Wakpa” oyate, known today as Sioux Valley Dakota Nation. He was raised by his grandparents, Jim Blacksmith (unka) aka Mazakaga, relatives to Pine Ridge South Dakota with his parents’ and Grandparents’ bloodlines. His grandmother (kunsi) Jennie Blacksmith, aka “Dowansa;” her parents and grandparents were from Sisseton, South Dakota area. “Dowansa” was one of the 38Dakota men who were hanged in Mankato, Minnesota on December 26, 1862, at 10 a.m. Haroldgoes down to participate in the memorial rides every December. He learnt his language and cultural ways from his grandparents and, to this day, he upholds those teachings, keeping his language strong, and being alcohol and drug free. Ohan...
