George Kayseas, a respected community elder, speaks on many of his pastimes as a leader and all of whom influenced him. He shares his stories of various employment accomplishments and challenges that he’s had over the last several decades. George shares stories of the old traditional ways and he compares how things have changed and what things are like today.

George is an active community member of Fishing Lake First Nation. He was born and raised here and has led his community as Chief for 3 consecutive terms. George has held many leadership roles throughout his career, from Chief to community advocate. At 80 years old, he works full time at the Fishing Lake Band Office as the Community Addictions Counsellor. Being the Community Addictions Counsellor is a position he is proud to hold as he has 45 years of sobriety. He was also honored by receiving a 35-year award from Health Canada as a certified addictions counsellor. George also acknowledges his sobriety and thanks his family of Alcoholics Anonymous. George also has many fond memories of travelling the country to attend A.A meetings and Dry dances where he would square dance the night away. Making many new friends and lifelong relationships, fiddle music and dancing are very dear to him! Currently, George lives on Fishing Lake First Nation where is very respected as an Elder. George is proud to be Anishinaabe and stresses the importance of learning and knowing your language and culture.
