He says there have been 21 graduates of the program, all of whom have employment, saying it will instill in them “identity, independence, and impact the community in a positive way.

Ashton Janvier currently teaches Denesuline to students from kindergarten to Grade 10 in northern British Columbia in a community called Fort Nelson. He’s originally from La Loche, Saskatchewan and Clearwater River Dene Nation. “If I lost my language, I wouldn’t be where I am now, and I wouldn’t know what it means to be Dene. Be proud of who you are and be proud of your language,” said Ashton.
Holly Toulejour interviews her fifth and final guest on the value, benefits and current occupation for graduates of the Dene Teachers Education Program through the First Nations University of Canada.
